Create or Open ZIP Files Locally in Your Browser

Bundle or extract ZIP files locally and review archive contents before saving them.

Can a web browser create and extract ZIP files locally?

Yes. JavaScript can compress selected files into a new ZIP and read many ordinary ZIP archives without uploading them. The browser still needs enough memory for the archive and extracted data, and opening an archive does not make its contents trustworthy.

How to use the tool

Choose create or extract

Select whether you are packaging local files or inspecting an existing ZIP.

Review names and sizes

Confirm the intended files and inspect archive entries before extracting them.

Download the result

Save the new ZIP or selected extracted files to a location you control.

Compression, storage and privacy

ZIP compression works best for text, spreadsheets and other uncompressed data. JPEG, MP4, PDF and many application formats are already compressed, so putting them in a ZIP may save little space. Packaging is still useful for keeping related files together.

Local processing avoids an upload service, but the final archive should be stored and shared according to the sensitivity of its contents. Ordinary ZIP compression is not the same as encryption.

  • Use meaningful file names before creating the archive.
  • Do not assume a .zip extension makes content safe.
  • Keep confidential archives in an appropriately encrypted storage workflow.
  • Check that recipients can open the compression and encryption method you choose.

Treat downloaded archives as untrusted

An archive can contain executable programs, scripts, misleading double extensions or extremely compressed data designed to expand far beyond the archive size. Inspect entry names and expected sizes before extracting an archive received from someone else.

The private workspace can guard against unsafe path names while extracting, but it is not an antivirus scanner. Use the operating system’s security tools for unfamiliar content.

Important limitations

  • Password-protected and uncommon ZIP variants may not be supported.
  • Large or highly compressed archives can exhaust browser memory.
  • The tool does not scan extracted files for malware.
  • ZIP packaging alone does not provide confidentiality.

Questions people ask

Why did my ZIP barely get smaller?

Photos, video and many PDFs already use compression, leaving little repeated data for ZIP compression to remove.

Can I open a password-protected ZIP?

Not in the current local workspace. Use a trusted archive program that explicitly supports the archive’s encryption method.

Is it safe to extract any ZIP locally?

No. Local extraction protects privacy but does not establish trust. Scan and inspect unfamiliar files before opening them.
